“Engagement” Photos

We’ve been engaged since last May, so it’s weird to call this an engagement shoot, but back in February Sarah took some photos of us to use for our Save the Date cards. We went to the Historic Yates Mill in southern Raleigh with every other couple who recently got engaged (seriously though, I did not know that it was such a hot spot for photographers!) It is very picturesque, though, even in February when everything is brown. We are both really awkward in front of the camera, but Sarah did a good job of loosening us up a little bit. I think they came out great!

What are you doing in here?

Most nights Ben and I go to bed at the same time. Last night, however, he wanted to work on getting a computer set up to our TV so we could watch the Wimbledon semifinals today. So, I got in bed at around 10:30 and spent fifteen minutes or so reading What is the What, a novel that tells the story of Valentino Achak Deng, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. Then I promptly fell asleep.

The next thing I knew, there was a Sudanese boy standing in the doorway of my bedroom, trying to steal my food.

“Who…what…what are you DOING in here?” I yelled as I jumped out of bed.

(It is at this point that I should probably mention that I wear a bite guard to bed to prevent teeth grinding, so it sounded quite garbled and not at all threatening.)

As this was happening, I started to wake up and realized that it was just Ben coming into bed.

“It’s just me!” he said.

My heart was racing, adrenaline pumping through my body.

Ben got into bed and hugged me and told me it was going to be okay. I couldn’t even talk at first, and I felt on the verge of laughing or crying.

Finally I was able to tell Ben that I thought he was a Sudanese boy coming to steal my food, and we both started laughing hysterically.

At least I now know how I’ll react in the extremely unlikely event that a Sudanese boy comes to steal my food while I’m sleeping.
