Prior to meeting Ben, my attempts at growing plants have been largely unsuccessful.
There were the cacti that I had in High School that survived a couple of years but eventually died because I forgot to water them for so long.
Prior to having surgery in Chile I wanted to buy a houseplant because I knew I wouldn’t get outside a lot during my recovery. I asked the lady at the nursery to give me the easiest plant to take care of. She gave me a cyclamen, which lasted a couple of months at most, despite my best efforts. To be fair, even my mom, who has a very green thumb, didn’t know why it died.
Ben’s sister gave us a house plant for Christmas (at my insisting) and I can barely remember to water it.
Needless to say, I was skeptical at first about Ben’s desire to have a vegetable garden. But he assured me that he had done it before with great success, so I only hoped that my bad luck would not rub off on him.
We soon figured out that there was not a good place in our yard for an in-ground garden. No spot gets all day sunshine, and we didn’t properly “prepare” the soil prior to the growing season (look at me, I seem to know what I’m talking about). So a container garden it was.
Our driveway is the sunniest spot in our yard, so that is how we came to have a driveway garden.
We haven’t been without mishap. The strawberries never grew. And our squash and zucchini have been plagued by powdery mildew and now some sort of bug. Ben’s not sure they’ll make it.
BUT we have cucumbers, peppers, butternut squash, carrots, corn, honeydew and watermelon all coming along and, as of now, doing well.
We have so far harvested and eaten cucumbers and a summer squash. We picked a zucchini last night but haven’t tried it yet.
I have to admit, I’m learning a lot and it’s been really fun to see everything grow.
