The perfect getaway

The other day I took one of those silly Facebook quizzes that asks about how many countries in the world you’ve been to.  I was kind of disappointed that I had only been to 13, while the “average user” has been to 23. I started to fantasize about taking a trip to St. Petersburg to visit my friend who lives there, or booking flights to Johannesburg to learn about the history of South Africa (which has always intrigued me), or going to Bosnia because I just watched In the Land of Blood and Honey, or backpacking through Europe, or visiting the Middle East. Even though I live overseas and have traveled throughout South America, there are times that I want more.

But this weekend I realized, sometimes the perfect getaway is just an hour and a half from where you are, in a place called Mirasol.

All you really need for an excellent weekend are friends, a beautiful beach house, a walk through a swamp to the beach, some great food and drink, and Gotye.

Lather, rinse, repeat (especially that Gotye song, probably around 30 times).

Optional is a cool lamp in which to take self portraits.

A weekend at the beach may not be a safari in Africa. But I would argue that it’s almost as fun, and much more relaxing.

  1. I agree. 🙂 Sometimes I get a little bummed about being in one country instead of keeping on the travels but then I realise that there are so many places an hour or so outside the city to visit. Next weekend I’m going to Guadalajara, for example. 🙂
